Android App UX Design Evolution

The Banno Mobile app on Android is going through a user experience (UX) design modernization to reflect Google’s Material Design 3 standards, while also enabling a high-performing and modern app experience that will feel more cohesive alongside the rest of the apps on Android devices.

To ensure a gradual migration to this new UX, Jack Henry is incrementally addressing portions of the app experience. Starting in Banno Mobile version 3.34 and onward, individual collections of screens and features will be upgraded to the new UX.

The sections below describe the changes expected with each release, providing a bird’s eye view of the progress to date and the progress still to come.

Mobile 3.29

Shipped

Released on Thursday, November 13, 2025, Banno Mobile 3.29 on Android included one significant UX design update – all screens throughout the app now conform to Google’s new 16 KB screen-size requirement, as seen in the example screenshot below.

Figure 1: Example screenshot of the new 16 KB screen-size. Note that this example includes placeholder text that accountholders will not see.

While preparing Mobile 3.29 for Android, our design and engineering teams were also conducting foundational research on the app’s existing template system:

  • Audited current navigation patterns
  • Assessed alignment with Material Design guidelines
  • Evaluated where updates will best provide value

Mobile 3.30

Shipped

Submitted to the Play Store on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, Banno Mobile 3.30 on Android included only minimal UX updates. Our team is still evaluating the future of how Banno Mobile will create and consume app themes on Android to fully align with Material 3 standards. Implementing this change ensures the app evolves seamlessly with future changes to Material.

Mobile 3.31

Shipped

Banno Mobile 3.31 on Android shipped with minor design changes. Our team is hard at work internally laying out strategies for migration and internally addressing design, layout and theming concerns towards a cohesive new Material 3 experience.

Mobile 3.32 - 3.33

Shipped Building

We’re shifting our previously communicated timeline slightly — the UX design updates will now be coming in 3.34 and beyond.

Don’t worry, though; we’re still moving full steam ahead! By taking a little extra time to solidify the Material 3 foundation in 3.34, we’ll be well positioned to accelerate our momentum in the coming months.

Note that version 3.32 of our Android app has shipped, and we’re currently building version 3.33.

Mobile 3.34

Planning

Explorations for moving to Material 3 are nearing conclusion. Mobile 3.34 will mark the kickoff of our related updates. Conversion will involve a flow-based approach, with foundational work starting in the 3.34 release by generating and consuming themes with the Material Theme Builder. This theme will be very comparable to the current theme, adjusted slightly to match the expectation and execution of the Material 3 theming engine. This theme will only be used on screens that have been upgraded to the new UX.

Our first conversion will likely involve the Recently used devices screen in 3.34. We will flesh out and refine the list further in subsequent releases, communicating the expected conversion areas here.
