Credit & debit cards
There are all kinds of ways to pay for goods and services, but none of them have replaced that little plastic rectangle. That doesn’t mean cards haven’t gotten more complex. Whether your card gets lost, you head on vacation, or you’re just looking to replace a worn down card, Banno apps give your users the tools to manage everything about their cards in one place.
How does it work?
Banno apps offer a host of features allowing users granular control over their cards. Using the Banno People, you can view and process a host of requests for all of your users.
Card management for Credit Unions
When it comes to keeping track of the people, places and things in life, sometimes a credit or debit card ends up missing—or maybe someone no longer needs access to a card. Somebody do something quick! Time is of the essence in these possibly stressful situations, and Card management offers your end users the security and ability to quickly report a lost or stolen card, activate a new card, and control card usage directly within Banno Apps.
What is it?
On the Dashboard, an end user sees Card management and an overall snapshot of information about their debit and credit cards, including:
- Card name
- Last four digits of the card number
- Account name
- Card status
- If a credit union has MyCardRules enabled, the card status doesn’t appear on the dashboard.
- Warm toggle switch
- A toggle button that enables and disables a card’s usage.
- If a credit union has MyCardRules, the toggle doesn’t appear on the dashboard.
- Toggling the button to appear green enables the card and makes it usable by the end user. Toggling the button to appear grey disables the card so that transactions will be denied, puts the card in a warm status, and displays a Locked card status to the end user.
- If an institution wants Card management, the warming functionality is required as part of the feature’s configuration.
- Card services
- Depending on the institution’s configuration, the end user can activate a new card, reorder a card, and report a lost or stolen card.
An end user can also access Card management within an individual account associated with the card.
Card status
A card’s usability status displays within Card management and the card details. Depending on the institution’s configuration, end users can change a card’s status using the warm toggle switch and Card services. Support users can change a card’s status on behalf of end users in Banno People.
Active (enable)
When a card’s issued and usable, an Active status displays. For the card to have an Active status, it must be enabled and not a warm card—the warm toggle switch displays green. In the Active status, card service functionality includes Report lost/stolen and Reorder card. Activate new card card service displays but can’t be selected.
When a card’s enabled (Active) or disabled (Locked) using the warm toggle switch, the card goes in and out of a warm status. An institution can also enable and disable the card within the file maintenance in Episys. When a card is disabled, the card’s status changes from 1 - Issued
to 2 - Captured
, and the reason code changes from 000 Retain
to 100 - Return
. When a card is enabled, the status changes back to 1 - Issued
and the reason code back to 000 - Return
. A card can only be warmed and disabled by the end user if the card’s in a 100 - Return
status. Requests to the core from the Banno platform send the active date, reissue code, status, and status reason to Episys.
For the card activation card service to work as expected, institutions need to ensure the Send Activation Message is set in Episys.

Do Not Reorder
If the card record in Episys was configured to not allow reordering, the card displays an Active status. The warm toggle switch that enables and disables the card will not display in Card management, but an end user can still utilize the Report lost/stolen card service.
Locked (disable)
When a card’s issued and unusable, a Locked status displays. To Lock the card, the end user disables the warm toggle switch, and a confirmation message displays for them to cancel or confirm disabling the card. When a card’s locked, it can no longer be used by the end user until the button is toggled on again. In a Locked status, Report lost/stolen card service displays, but the option to Reorder card does not. To make the card usable again, an end user needs to enable the warm toggle switch, which returns the card to an Active status.
Expired
When a card’s expiration date passes, an Expired status displays, and the card will be unusable by the end user. The Reorder card and Report lost/stolen card services are available to the end user.
Stolen
An end user can report a stolen card by selecting the Report lost/stolen card service. A Stolen status will display, and the card will be unusable by the end user—transactions will be denied.
Lost
An end user can report a missing card by selecting the Report lost/stolen card service. A Stolen status will display, and the card will be unusable by the end user—transactions will be denied.
Ordered
If an end user was issued a new card and has yet to activate it, an Ordered status displays. Report lost/stolen and Active new card card services are available to the end user. The warm toggle switch is also usable.
Card services
By selecting an individual card within Card management, an end user can access card services such as activating, reordering, and reporting a lost or stolen card. Depending on a card’s status, a card service may or may not be available to the end user. Also, Card management functionality may vary from institution to institution, because card services can be configured individually. If your institution chooses to use any of these card services, please contact Banno Support through ForClients.
Activate new card
- Select card
- Card services
- Activate new card
When an end user receives a new card, they can activate the card within Banno Apps by selecting the card displayed in Card management on the Dashboard. Then they’ll need to select the Activate new card card service. If a card’s Locked using the warm toggle switch, it can reactivate; cards marked as lost, stolen, or reordered can’t reactivate.
Reorder card
- Select card
- Card services
- Reorder card
When an end user requests a new card by selecting the Reorder card card service, a message—configurable by your institution—asks the end user to confirm the reorder. In Card management, an Active status displays. The warm toggle switch, Report lost/stolen, and Activate new card display but are unavailable to the end user. Your institution can also reorder the card on the end user’s behalf in Banno People.
A reordered card arrives Active to the end user. The expiration date for the old card is removed and replaced with the new expiration date post first PIN transaction with the new card. Therefore, the Activate new card card service is unavailable in Banno Apps while a card moves through the process. Requests to the core from the Banno platform send the reissue code, status, and status reason to Episys.
Report lost/stolen
- Select card
- Card services
- Report lost/stolen
An end user reports a lost or stolen card by selecting the Report lost/stolen card service. When an end user reports a lost or stolen card using Banno Apps, a notice—which is not configurable—states the card can no longer be used. Once a card is reported as lost or stolen, the end user is also unable to reactive the card in Banno Apps. Your institution can also report the card as lost or stolen on the end user’s behalf in Banno People.
In Episys, cards reported as lost or stolen are assigned a hot
status. Unless the card’s CloseDate
updates in Episys, it’s unremovable from hot
status via Banno Apps. In Episys, reporting the card as lost places the card in a 001 retain
status, and reporting the card as stolen places the card in a 002 retain
status.
Card filtering
To remove a card from displaying in Banno Apps, it must have a closed date. Institutions can update the CloseDate
—under the access record in the card record—in Episys. Unless the institution updates the close date, cards in all other statuses, including Expired, Lost, or Stolen, display to the end user. Cards with a Status
of Captured
in the card record on core won’t display.

Full Service Credit Cards
Jack Henry’s Full Service Credit Cards (FSCC) provide a wealth of functionality to give your end users the experience they want when accessing their cards. When combined with the Banno platform, your end users get all that functionality with the user experience they know and love. How does it all pull together? Read on to find out.
Accessing your cards
You can access your credit card accounts as you would any other account, from the dashboard’s accounts list. Here you can view a wealth of information about your card, including:
- Credit usage
- Routing number
- Payment information
- Account activity
- Interest rate
- Reward points
From this view you can also access individual card accounts, from which you can pay a card bill, set up alerts and protections, and separate entity institutions can report, reorder, or activate cards.
This screen will vary slightly based on what kind of Full Service Credit Cards your institution uses: single entity or separate entity.
Single entity
Single entity means each account is tied to one and only one card. In this case, the account number matches the card number and all controls work at the account level, rather than the card level. Single entity is used very widely, but new institutions primarily use separate entity.
Separate entity
Separate entity allows multiple cards to be associated with a single account. The account number and card number do not match, as multiple different card numbers can be associated with a single account. This allows cards to be reported lost or stolen without needing to close the account completely. Reporting cards lost, reordering cards, or activating cards all happen at the card level, rather than the account level.
Payments
Paying a card account is simple, with a Pay button appearing with other card details when a payment can be made. Payments may be made from either internal or external accounts, with external accounts using ACH to process the payment. External payments will also prompt the user and walk them through the process of adding an external account if one is not already saved.
When choosing to pay, the following amount options are available:
- Statement balance
- Current balance
- Minimum amount due
- Other (enter an amount)
An end user cannot pay more than the current balance on the card. End users can also enroll in autopay, which will always process on the due date for the card. Autopay details appear on the account screen and automatic payments can be canceled directly from that view.
FAQ
- Can an end user set a date for autopay?
- Currently autopay can only be set to process on the due date for the account.
- Can I use account alerts on my Full Service Credit Card account?
- Account level alerts are not available for FSCC accounts. Transaction level alerts are available, however.
MyCardRules
Banno offers enhanced card controls through the MyCardRules integration. Accessible entirely within Banno Apps or Banno Admin, these controls offer robust self-service fraud prevention options to users.
What can it do?
Banno’s MyCardRules integration brings the core functionality of the stand-alone MyCardRules app into the Banno Apps experience. Within the Cards dashboard, a selection of controls are available for users to configure from any Banno App.

- Transactions that would bring the user’s monthly spending over this amount will send an alert, but will not be blocked.
Each of these controls can be set independently. However, the app will enforce a set of rules for these limits:
- If both Spending limit and Spending alert are set, the alert amount must be lower than the limit.
- If both Monthly spending limit and Monthly spending alert are set, the alert amount must be lower than the limit.
- Transaction limits and alerts must be lower than any corresponding monthly limits and alerts.
If any of these rules are violated, the user will be unable to save their settings and an input error will display the corresponding rule to correct for.

Users can set preferred notification methods for both blocked transactions and notification alerts. By default, In-app message will be selected for both, but users may enable any or all of the following options:
- In-app message
- Text message
If the user disables all notification methods for either alert type, the Save button will be disabled and a message will inform the user that at least one method must be selected.
What enterprise tools are available?
A user’s current settings can be viewed and edited on behalf of the user from within the Card management card for that user in Banno People by selecting Alerts and protections. Available options are identical to those located within Banno Apps, including enabling or disabling any available alerts or transaction blocks. Any notifications or blocked transactions are logged in that user’s Notifications tab, and any changes to card controls will trigger an Activity event.
Card management can be disabled for a user within Banno People. This will disable all card controls, not just those provided by the MyCardRules integration.
Enterprise users also have access to mConsole, the stand-alone MyCardRules enterprise app. While much of the functionality in mConsole will be accessible to Banno users, it is not the recommended portal for configuring the MyCardRules integration as some data will appear differently in that app. For more information, please contact Banno Support.
What’s different between the stand-alone app and MyCardRules integrated into Banno?
- Dependent cards: Each end user with access to the account has access to controls+alerts. In the stand-alone app, end users can have granular controls+permissions.
- My location: In the stand-alone app, end users can restrict transactions based on the location of your mobile phone.
- Region: In the stand-alone app, end users can restrict transactions based on specific geographic regions.
FAQ
- Who is able to use the MyCardRules integration?
- The MyCardRules integration is currently available for users with debit cards on the SilverLake, 2020, Core Director, and Episys core.
- Can a user block all transactions?
- While the stand-alone MyCardRules app allows for blocking all transactions for a card, Banno Apps do not utilize this same functionality as this is already possible by disabling a card.
- Do end users need to manage their MyCardRules settings separately for debit and credit cards?
- Yes, MyCardRules settings for debit cards must be managed separately from MyCardRules settings for credit cards.
Digital wallet integrations
A digital wallet, also known as a mobile wallet, are applications that securely store end users’ payment information for various payment methods and websites. This virtual wallet allows end users to compelete transactions without the need for a physical card or cash.
Digital wallets can be accessed through various devices, utilizing technologies like Near Field Communication (NFC) for contactless payments. They offer features like storing multiple card details, tracking payment history, and making online or in-store purchases.
The Jack Henry Platform’s digital wallet support for your online and mobile apps place this functionality directly in the hand of your end users, housed entirely in their apps.
How does it work?
Digital wallets replace sensitive card information with unique tokens, which are used for transactions instead of the actual card numbers, minimizing the risk of card theft and fraud.
All data transmitted between the digital wallet and the payment terminal is encrypted, ensuring that card details remain secure during transactions.
Adding Cards to Your Digital Wallet
There are three primary ways that end-users can add their active cards to digital wallets:
- In-wallet push provisioning
- The cardholder manually enters user and card details directly to the digital wallet. This form of entry usually requires additional authorization by the end user, the FI, or both. If your FI does not currently offer in-wallet push provisioning, you can contact your card processor to find out how to do so.
- In-app push provisioning
- The cardholder selects a button from within their banking app to push all of their user and card details securely to the card services. Typically the user is already identified, and the wallets simply be added without requiring additional authentication to enroll.
- Browser-based push provisioning
- The cardholder provisions cards through the browser. The card is passed to an associated Apple or Google account rather than the device. The device is notified and enrollment is completed on the device. This method of provisioning is not currently supported through our digital banking apps.
Our functionality supports a variety of digital wallets available to end users, including:
- Visa
- Apple Wallet
- Google Wallet
- Mastercard
- Apple Wallet
- Google Wallet
- Samsung Pay
- Click2Pay
Tokenization
Tokenization includes three different parties: Jack Henry, the card networks, and the wallet provider (such as Apple or Google).
User initiatives push provisioning from within by selecting Add to button within card management. Jack Henry then retrieves information from the relevant wallet. The device in turn supplies Jack Henry with device, wallet, and session identification details. That information, alongside Jack Henry’s card and user information, is encripted and passed to the associated networks. The networks return a decision as to how to progress.
Digital wallet authentication
Tokenization results in one of three approval paths:
- Green path
- The decision is immediately approved, and the card will be added to the wallet without further action.
- Yellow path
- The decision needs additional authentication. The end user will be prompted to select one of two authentication methods:
- Authenticate via one-time passcode sent through email
- Call the financial institution’s support phone number
SMS Text is not supported by CPS
- Red path
- The enrollment request is declined due to suspected fraud or eligibility requirements that were not not met.
FAQ
- Can an end user reactivate a debit card that was put on hold by their financial institution?
- Institutions with MyCardRules advanced card controls take care of the logic under the hood and prevent the end user from reactivating cards on hold. For institutions without advanced card controls, this depends on how your institution puts cards on hold. If the card is set to warm, the end user is able to reactivate the card, while cards set to hot require the institution to reactivate.
- Is there a way to filter cards labeled as “Stolen” or prevent them from displaying in Banno Apps?
- SilverLake and CIF 20/20 are the only cores that remove cards labeled as “Stolen.” After 30 days, the card automatically filters and no longer displays.
